Dr. Roy B. V. B. Simorangkir – Assistant Professor

Roy earned a B.S. degree in Telecommunication Engineering from the Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia, in 2010, followed by a year of lecturing at the Institut Teknologi Harapan Bangsa. Subsequently, he pursued higher education, earning an M.S. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Yonsei University, South Korea, in 2014, and a PhD in Electronic Engineering from Macquarie University, Australia, in 2018. Nadeem Rather – PhD Student

Nadeem has been pursuing his doctoral research within the Wireless Sensor Networks Group at Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, Ireland since 2020, under the guidance of Dr Brendan O’Flynn, Dr John Buckley, Dr Salvatore Tedesco, and Roy. He has been exploring the development of advanced AI algorithms and innovative techniques to amplify the performance and efficiency of RFID systems. More information here.

Abdullah Hatim M. Alshammari – PhD Student

Abdullah is currently pursuing a PhD degree in antenna and propagation at Durham University, UK, under the supervision of Dr Ismail Ben Mabrouk and Roy. His research interests include biomedical implantable antennas for wireless capsule endoscopy and flexible antennas. He received a B.Sc. degree in Communication and Software Engineering from Al-Balqa Applied University, Jordan, in 2015. He received an M.Sc. degree in Microelectronic and Communication Engineering from Northumbria University, UK, in 2020.

Abdulwahab Alghamdi – PhD Student

Abdulwahab is currently fully dedicated to pursuing a PhD in wireless communications under the supervision of Dr Ismail Ben Mabrouk and Roy. His research focuses on designing implantable antennas for leadless pacemaker devices, which holds significant potential for advancing medical technology. He received a BEng degree in Communications and Electronics Engineering from Applied Science University in Jordan. More information here.

Liu Chang – PhD Student

Chang completed his B.A.Sc. degree in Computer Science at Macau University of Science and Technology, Macau, China, in 2020. He then went on to obtain his M.A.Sc. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Durham University, Durham, England, UK, in 2022. Currently, Chang is actively pursuing a Ph.D. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Durham University under the supervision of Dr Ismail Ben Mabrouk and Roy. His research focuses on wireless capsule endoscopy, antennas, and implantable medical devices.

William J. Bourne – MEng Student

William is a Master’s student at the Department of Engineering, Durham University. He is researching transparent antenna development for next-generation vehicular communication networks under the supervision of Dr Ismail Ben Mabrouk and Roy. He expects to graduate in June 2024.

Eryk Skalinski – MEng Student

Eryk is currently undertaking his final year of a General Engineering MEng at Durham University with a specialization in Electronics, due to graduate in June 2024. He is currently working on his final project on the design of sub-THz LTCC antenna for V2V communication, supervised by Dr Ismail Ben Mabrouk and Roy. He had previously spent a year within the Neurotechnology group of TTP PLC, working on wireless power transfer and power systems for medical implants. More information here.
